Woody

Andy’s favourite toy is based on Sheriff Woody, the star of the kids TV show Woody’s Roundup. In the Toy Story universe, the show ran from 1949-1957, ending the year the first space launch took place. (Suddenly, kids were way more interested in watching space and sci-fi shows, and less interested in westerns.) 

Buzz Lightyear

Captain Buzz Lightyear is an action figure who has his own Saturday morning TV show, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command. On the show, Buzz and his team of space cadets work to keep the galaxy safe from evil. Their nemesis is the dastardly Emperor Zurg.

Green Aliens

The three-eyed green aliens are promotional toys for the Pizza Planet restaurant chain. They live inside a game found at the restaurant. They believe that “The Claw” will come down and take them to a better place. Three of the toys are rescued by Mr. Potato Head in Toy Story 2 and return to live with the other toys in Andy’s room.

Sarge

Sarge is the leader of the plastic toy soldiers, who come from the large “Bucket O Soldiers.” Sarge is very loyal to his men, and makes sure no one is left behind when they go on reconnaissance missions.

Mr. Potato Head

Mr. Potato Head is a classic toy that’s been around since 1952 (it was the first toy to be advertised on television). The toy was invented by a man named George Lerner, who used to collect potatoes from his mother’s garden and then stick fruits into them to make what he called “funny face men” for his younger sisters to play with.

Bo Peep

Based on the heroine of the children’s nursery rhyme Little Bo Peep, Bo Peep is a porcelain figurine. She has a sweet spot for Woody.

Wheezy

Wheezy is a squeeze penguin who suffers from asthma. Wheezy’s “squeaker” no longer works. He’s the toy Woody rescues from the broken toy box before Al snatches Woody.

Rex

Although Rex is a large, scary-looking, plastic dinosaur, he is afraid of most things. He is always worrying about something, and the other toys spend a lot of time trying to bolster his confidence.

Hamm

Hamm is a humorous plastic piggy bank. His best friend is Mr. Potato Head.

Slinky

Slinky is a toy dachshund with a slinky torso. He is based on the Slinky Dog toy that was popular from the 1950s all the way to the early 1970s.
