An Island Adventure

In Nim’s Island, a reclusive writer comes to the aid of a courageous girl left alone on a tropical isle

Most kids would love to be Nim, the little girl who lives with her scientist father, Jack, on a deserted island near Australia.

Nim doesn’t have to bundle up to go to school, her dad is her teacher and she learns by helping him with his experiments involving animals, the tides and the weather.

She doesn’t have to ask for a dog or cat as a pet because she has three animal pals of her own — Selkie the sea lion, Fred the iguana and Galileo the frigatebird (it looks like a tropical pelican). And Jack has taught Nim to understand both the dolphin language and the sea lion language.

The only people who know where to find Jack and Nim’s island are the sailors who deliver their supplies a few times a year by boat. This independent father and daughter (Nim’s mother was killed by a whale) use a solar panel to provide the electricity needed to run their computer and charge their cellphone.

Nim’s favourite books are the Alex Rover adventure novels. Alex is a big, strong hero, but the books are actually written by a shy woman named Alexandra Rover, who lives alone in an apartment she rarely ever leaves.

However, Alexandra’s life changes when she gets an email from Nim. It seems Jack went sailing to complete an experiment and promised he would call Nim every night to check in on her. But he hasn’t called in days and Nim is afraid something has happened to him. Can Alexandra overcome her fears and make her way to Nim’s Island to help her young friend?

Nim’s Island opens April 4
