New Year’s Message
Greetings from Ellis Jacob, President and CEO, Cineplex Entertainment
Happy New Year! Welcome to the January 2009 issue of Famous magazine.
The holiday season is a special time to reflect and focus on family and friends; to celebrate the relationships that give meaning to our personal lives and begin the year with renewed energy and focus. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of you the best for 2009.
Last year was an eventful one for the Cineplex Entertainment team. We have been working hard on a number of great initiatives including the expansion of the SCENE program to include music downloads and exclusive contests for members, with much more to come in 2009. If you haven’t already joined, you can do so by visiting Scene.ca. In late 2008, we opened the Cineplex Store on our website, Cineplex.com. The Cineplex Store extends the theatre experience by enabling you to purchase the movie you enjoyed in-theatre and add it to your collection at home. Purchasing DVDs online is the first phase, future phases will enable you to download movies to own in addition to earning SCENE points. The Cineplex Store will continue to evolve throughout 2009 so you will want to visit often to see what is new. We also added several digital projectors to our theatres across the country this past year, bringing our total to 65. And we added REALD 3D to 45 of these projectors so we can present the exciting slate of 3D movies being released this year.
Our goal at Cineplex Entertainment is to provide you with an exceptional entertainment experience, so in addition to great movies, we continue to expand our alternative programming. From ballet and Met Opera performances broadcast live in high definition, to various concerts and comedy festivals, we continue to expand our entertainment offerings on our big screens so that you have a variety from which to choose.
We have also been actively raising funds for an extremely important charitable organization, the Starlight Children’s Foundation, and have raised more than $500,000 in the last year alone through various fundraising activities. The Starlight Foundation helps seriously ill children and their families cope with their pain, fear and isolation through entertainment, education and family activities. Cineplex Entertainment is delighted to be a major sponsor and we thank each of you for your support of the activities we do in-theatre to assist this organization.
